classroom cruiser

Overview

A child-sized stationary bike designed for elementary classrooms (grades K–6, ages 4–12) to support self-regulation and focus during learning. The bike integrates a stable workspace for books, paper, or Chromebooks while students pedal.

Role: Lead Designer
Timeline: 2019
Team: Design, Engineering, K-Power Sports Co.

Context

The Classroom Cruiser adapts a commercial stationary bike drivetrain for pediatric use. It balances safety, ergonomics, and classroom compatibility, enabling active learning without disrupting instruction.

Challenge

  • Use an existing drivetrain provided by K-Power Sports Co.

  • Fit a wide age range with differences in leg length, reach, and strength (K-6)

  • Reduce pedal resistance for younger children

  • Prevent premature bearing wear under classroom use

  • Provide ergonomic adjustability across an 8-year developmental span (ages 4-12)

  • Integrate a safe, stable learning platform that does not obstruct pedalling

Outcome

A classroom-ready stationary bike which turns fidgeting into focused, active learning. Kids need to move to learn, the Classroom Cruiser allows them to stay in motion while exploring and contributing to the classroom curriculum.

The design adapts commercial fitness hardware to pediatric users with appropriate resistance, durability, and ergonomic adjustability, plus a safe integrated workspace.
